OpenMotiveCAD

Engineering intent,made geometric.

We’re building open AI for editable mechanical CAD—turning explicit requirements into parametric models, then checking the geometry against what you asked for.

Generate. Edit. Verify.

An OpenMotive research project. Capabilities and results will be published as they are validated.

Change the design. Keep the intent.

An edit should change what you requested—not quietly rebuild everything else.

Example request

Create a 120 × 80 × 6 mm plate with four 8.5 mm through-holes on a centered 90 × 50 mm pattern.

Start with explicit requirements.

  • Extrude · plate body
  • Hole · ⌀8.5 mm through
  • Rectangular pattern · 2×2
  • Datum · lower Z = 0
  • L 120 mm
  • t 6.0 mm
  • pitch X 90 mm
  • edge offset 15 mm

Transcript and about this example
  1. 0–7s Start with explicit requirements.
  2. 7–13s A part with editable parameters.
  3. 13–22s Change thickness. Preserve the mounting pattern.
  4. 22–33s Preserve the relationship—not every coordinate.
  5. 33–42s Inspect what changed. Check what stayed fixed.
  6. 42–48s Generate. Edit. Verify.

Mode: validated sample from `omcad compile` / `omcad validate`. No live model call. Horizontal pitch changes 90 → 110 mm in the width edit by design.

When an operation fails, diagnose it without silently relaxing the requirements.

A valid solid is only the beginning.

A part can look correct and still have the wrong dimensions. OpenMotive CAD is being designed to check explicit requirements—not just whether a model renders.

Geometry validity

Kernel produces a solid with positive volume (validated sample).

Dimension checks

Bounding box, thickness, hole diameter, and pattern from fixture reports.

Edit preservation

Thickness edit keeps hole XY. Width edit preserves 15 mm center-to-edge offsets and intentionally updates pitch 90 → 110 mm.

Export testing

Sample STEP and editable OMCAD are separate artifacts. STEP does not claim full feature-tree round-trip.

Geometric checks do not establish strength, manufacturability, or safety. Those require additional engineering evidence.

The editable feature definition is retained alongside the STEP geometry.

Measured by correct results. Not convincing answers.

We’re researching whether a CAD-specialized open-weight model can deliver non-inferior verified quality versus a frontier comparator (GPT-6 Astra) on supported single-part workflows—at materially lower operating cost per verified result.

Study proposed · No published OpenMotive results.

Research target: at least 50% lower operating cost per verified result.Proposed target, not a measured result. Protocol draft: two-percentage-point quality non-inferiority margin and upper-bound cost-ratio gate. Not identical accuracy or general CAD parity.

A cost reduction only counts if the prespecified quality requirement also passes. Scope is narrow supported tasks—not assemblies or safety certification.

Model calls, unsuccessful attempts, repair, geometry execution, and validation belong in the operating-cost measurement. Credits do not make usage free.

Designed to be inspected.

Instruction → OMCAD feature definition → CAD kernel → Geometry checks → CAD artifacts

The model proposes operations. The kernel constructs geometry. The checks evaluate the result.

Future research direction

Today’s scope starts with explicit part requirements. Longer term, OpenMotive’s machine models could provide mounting interfaces, neighboring geometry, motion envelopes, and source uncertainty—so CAD can be developed in context.

OpenMotive — vehicle geometry remains the parent product. Unknown space is not verified clearance.

Help make CAD generation more verifiable.
